Dolly Parton Biography

Perhaps as much known for her physical traits as she is her phenomenal country-western voice, Dolly Parton is one of the most well-respected female country stars in music history. During her career, she has had 25 #1 hits on the country charts, 41 top 10 country albums and 110 charted singles during her 40 year career. She has garnered seven Grammy Awards, while receiving 42 Grammy nominations.

Born Dolly Rebecca Parton in January 1946 in Sevierville, Tennessee, Parton grew up with little money as the fourth of 12 children. In fact, Parton and husband Carl Dean, ended up raising five of her younger brothers and sisters. She has been well-known throughout much of her career for her surgically-enhanced bust and sometimes flamboyant personality.

She began singing as a child on local radio stations and by the age of 12, was doing regular appearances on local television outlets. She started recording at the age of 13 with a small record label and making appearances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. After graduating from high school, Parton moved to Nashville and officially signed with Monument Records as a pop singer; however, after limited success, she switched genres to country music and began her rise to the top. Parton's voice was tailor-made for country radio, with its upbeat soprano lilt and her natural Tennessee twang.

Her first country single, Dumb Blonde, went to #24 on the charts. That same year, she joined the Porter Wagoner syndicated TV show and recorded duets for seven years before pursuing a solo career. In fact, her 1974 hit I Will Always Love You, which was a #1 hit on the country charts was covered by Whitney Houston for the 1992 movie The Bodyguard, starring Houston and Kevin Costner. Parton says she received $6 million in royalties from Houston’s cover of the tune.

Parton released a successful pop album in 1977 and began to pursue an acting career that same year. She saw acting success with her appearance in the 1980 movie 9 to 5, alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda; however, her acting career took somewhat of a nosedive after that, seeing Parton only appear in bit parts in movies and TV shows. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984.

After 20 years of recording music, Parton switched to Columbia Records in 1987, where she remained until 1995. In addition to her entertainment career, Parton also still runs a theme park in Tennessee dubbed Dollywood (founded in 1961). She also owns a restaurant just outside the theme park called “Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede” and runs a production company with former manager Sandy Gallin. Sandollar Productions is responsible for hit movies like Father of the Bride I and II and the popular television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She is currently recording with Sugar Hills Records.
Parton is set to release a second live DVD and record Live From London in October 2009. She is working on a dance album entitled Dance with Dolly as well.

Robert Pattinson is my inspiration, says Ashely Greene

Melbourne, June 21 : 'Twilight' star Ashley Greene, has revealed that her co-star in the film, Robert Pattinson, is her inspiration.

The 23-year-old is impressed by how Pattinson remains unfazed by stardom despite a huge fan following.

"Robert Pattinson, who plays my adoptive brother in the Twilight films, has been one of my biggest inspirations," the Daily Telegraph quoted Greene as telling The Mail.

"As a person, he''s not like anyone I''ve ever met in Hollywood, and as an actor he''s a complete natural. He has no ego. Everyone loves him, but he''s unaffected by that and never seems fazed by the attention that comes his way," said Greene.

"He''s not changed a bit since I worked with him on the first Twilight movie. He''s a great night out if you tag along with him to a pub or bar. He''s not the nightclubbing, get-up-and-dance kind of guy, but during shooting we''ll join him back at his hotel, where he''ll get out his guitar and we''ll have a loud sing along," she added.

ABOVE Magazine ‘Creating a Global Green Community’

NEW YORK, Coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2010, ABOVE magazine releases its Spring/Summer issue and further highlights the greatest challenge of our time – protecting the planet’s endangered natural resources.
This celebratory issue features cover model Elettra Weidemann shot by renowned art and fashion photographer Bettina Rheims. In this stunning and intimate portfolio, Elettra uses the opportunity to talk of her commitment to the environment and to set the record straight on her own identity (she is Isabella’s daughter; her surname, however, is not Rossellini).

“Earth Day is a perfect example of people pulling together, donating their time, energy, talent, money, art – whatever they have to contribute – to protect and preserve the beauty of our world,” says Nicolas Rachline, ABOVE’s publisher and editor-in-chief. “And it should be entertaining, too, because nothing effective is ever achieved by being boring.”

Also for ABOVE’s Spring/Summer issue, Tierney Gearon traveled to Florida’s Everglades to create an original series of her signature double-exposure photographs. An accompanying story by Kirk Nielsen delves deep into the puzzling reality of the Everglades, North America’s largest subtropical wilderness. Wade Davis submits his post-COP15 report from Copenhagen, concluding, “We must change the fundamental way in which we inhabit the planet.” And James Balog closes the issue with a startling look at what awaits us when the glaciers are gone, photographing and chronicling the effects of global warming in Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, and the Rocky Mountains.

On a lighter note, the timeless Carol Alt shares her views of natural and health-conscious living, while supermodel Helena Christensen invites readers into her “secret garden” in a corner of Greenwich Village.

And then we have a candid conversation with the always thought-provoking Philippe Starck in which he calls into question his status as an iconic designer and his relevancy in light of the issues facing humanity yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

ABOVE magazine is published quarterly by Centoria Limited with a cover price of $10.00. It is distributed globally by Comag, a division of Conde Nast.

Naked News - “The Program With Nothing to Hide”

Naked News' slogan reads “The Program With Nothing to Hide,” and everything holds true to that. The Canadian-based program presents the news completely bare, with little exception, including a segment they present outside naked. The exception being if they are in the process of disrobing, or if they are reporting a tragic news event. Gabriel Pollard, writing for Wikinews, interviewed Victoria Sinclair about the “sensual, but not sexual” Naked News, and her presenting role.

The show had a fairly basic start, with two friends, Fernando Perreira and Kirby Stasnyk, bluntly thinking that the news would be better presented naked. Sinclair said, “In this case, these men had the means and the will to turn their idea into reality.” A Russian program with a similar concept, "600 seconds" on M1 TV, in which news anchor Svetlana Pesotskaya removed an article of clothing after each story, received high ratings within eight months of its introduction in 1999. Naked Broadcasting Network Inc. also started a male edition in 2001, but this was discontinued a few years later due to lack of interest from its key demographic, the gay community. It failed to get the same kind of grounding experienced by the female edition. Later imitators in Hong Kong and Japan have also proved successful.

In 1999—its inception—Naked News only had around 8,000 subscribers of a free five-minute show hosted on Daily Dirt. They now boast six million paid subscribers to a much longer news program of 22-minutes produced every six days from 172 countries worldwide. Lead Anchor and spokeswoman Victoria Sinclair puts the success of the international viewership due to the “captivating, saucy, and certainly different” way of presenting the news, “That certainly counts when the news is bad—which it often is.” The public loves the format, and have become “quite attached” to the anchors, says 38-year-old Sinclair.

“I believe the secret to our success is that we challenged the accepted boundaries while keeping it clean and tasteful.

“I think the way has been paved for us by mainstream journalism; we would never have been embraced so eagerly by the world if it weren’t well prepared.”

Sinclair says the reason she got attracted to the Naked News program in the first place was because of its originality, and it felt “very adventurous and underground.” “I think we have a friendlier way of delivering the news....”

As well as the show being streamed onto the Internet, another version of the show called Naked News TV! is also available on pay-per-view in the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, etc. Naked News TV! is a weekly 50-minute show and marks Naked News' success at porting over from the Internet to television.

While Sinclair has been presenting Naked News since the pilot programme in May 1999 – production started in December 1999 – she can't see herself doing anything else, unless it is equally as “unusual”, involves technology, and the Internet. However, she did take a year sabbatical after 9/11. She left her previous job of marketing because it was no longer fulfilling. Sinclair plans to continue her anchoring role in Naked News, and holding a position of Public Relations, as the show expands into the new markets of South Korea and Italy until the time comes that she looks better non-nude.

Her “loving and supportive” family and friends are entirely supportive of her current profession. “They are all accustomed to me as it is through their influence that I have become such an independent freethinker.”
